We believe polymetallic nodules offer significant environmental and social advantages compared to land-based mining, where declining ore grades and diminishing quality pose increasing environmental and social impacts.

 

Unlike traditional mining on land, harvesting seafloor polymetallic nodules requires minimal overburden removal, avoids deforestation, demands limited production infrastructure, and avoids major environmental and social issues such as acid mine drainage, community displacement and human rights violations.As low-carbon technologies become more embedded in energy systems to address rising global power demands, minerals are taking on a vital role.

 

Clean Energy Technologies like EVs, solar panels, wind turbines, and batteries depend heavily on critical minerals such as nickel, cobalt, manganese, copper, and REEs.Societies demands for these minerals is expected to surge dramatically. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), cobalt demand is projected to increase by a factor of 21, while nickel demand could grow 19 times by 2040.

 

Our mission is to provide the U.S. with an alternative option for where it sources its critical minerals, and to demonstrate the sustainable nature of this alternative through comprehensive studies and research.American Metal will build upon the extensive environmental studies and monitoring programs that have been carried out in the CCZ over the past 20 years, and we have been pleased by recent results from trial mining in the CCZ that indicate less environmental impact than originally predicted.For example, the results indicate that the sediment plume is spreading across a much smaller area on the seabed than anticipated, due to the creation of a localized turbidity current at the extraction interface. This is indicating that the sediment is not being passively carried away by the background ocean current, thus impacting a much smaller area.
